The Basilica el Convento Nossa Senhora de Carmo is considered to be one of the oldest among the Carmelite Order in Recife Brazil. Although the church is steep in its history, there is a portion of the Basilica el Convento Nossa Senhora de Carmo which had been extensively renovated. Some parts which have been newly renovated such as the enormous staircase are now made of iron, concrete, and steel. Even with the modernization of the church, you can still detect a hint of Gothic architecture which is prevalent during the 18th century. During one of the most popular Christian events known as the Holy Week, the church is packed with locals as well as tourists from all over the world.
History has it that the place where the Basilica el Convento Nossa Senhora de Carmo is now standing used to be where a palace was once built. The Basilica el Convento Nossa Senhora de Carmo is located at Av. Dantas Barreto, in the Carmo Square. The church is open on Mondays from 7 in the morning until 5 in the afternoon. It is also open on Tuesday until Friday from 7 in the morning until 6 in the afternoon. On Saturdays, the church is open from 7 in the morning until 12 noon. On Sundays, the church is open from 9 until 11 in the morning and 7 until 9 in the evening.
