Remembering the Basilica el Convento Nossa Senhora de Carmo in Recife

The Basilica el Convento Nossa Senhora de Carmo is considered to be one of the oldest among the Carmelite Order in Recife Brazil. The Basilica el Convento Nossa Senhora de Carmo designed to have impressive interior and equally impressive exterior decorations.  There are still traces of baroque art which are still visible in the golden altar.  With the regular clean up and maintenance, the life-like image of Our Lady of Carmo is still as it was when it was placed in the church centuries ago.  The golden altar also houses various types of precious rocks and priceless gold crowns.  When you plan to visit the Basilica el Convento Nossa Senhora de Carmo, make sure you take a glimpse of the massive and elaborate jacaranta-wood altar.

You can find a lot of information about the Basilica el Convento Nossa Senhora de Carmo at the Regional Institute of the IPHAN or Instituto do Patrimonio Historico Artistico Nacional which in English translates to Institute of National and Historical Artistic Patrimony.  Although the church is steep in its history, there is a portion of the Basilica el Convento Nossa Senhora de Carmo which had been extensively renovated.  Some parts which have been newly renovated such as the enormous staircase are now made of iron, concrete, and steel.  Even with the modernization of the church, you can still detect a hint of Gothic architecture which is prevalent during the 18th century.  During one of the most popular Christian events known as the Holy Week, the church is packed with locals as well as tourists from all over the world.

History has it that the place where the Basilica el Convento Nossa Senhora de Carmo is now standing used to be where a palace was once built. The Basilica el Convento Nossa Senhora de Carmo is located at Av. Dantas Barreto, in the Carmo Square. The church is open on Mondays from 7 in the morning until 5 in the afternoon. It is also open on Tuesday until Friday from 7 in the morning until 6 in the afternoon. On Saturdays, the church is open from 7 in the morning until 12 noon. On Sundays, the church is open from 9 until 11 in the morning and 7 until 9 in the evening.
