In Awe with Catedral De Sao Pedro Dos Clerigos in Recife

The Catedral de Sao Pedro dos Clerigos in Recife serves as the centerpiece of the Patio de Sao Pedro. In English, the church's name means Cathedral of St. Peter of Clerics, with one of the most beautiful facades in 18th century Recife architecture. Built between 1728 and 1759, it stands as an interesting historical and cultural artifact in the square of St. Peter. It has Baroque features with a little Portuguese design in its façade. Right at the center of the church, you will be greeted by a door with exquisite carvings. The altars of jacaranda wood, a pulpit plated with gold, and a ceiling painted with unique renderings is just some things surely to catch the eye of the appreciative traveler.

The construction of the Catedral de Sao Pedro dos Clerigos began in the year 1728. It was under Father Jose Fialho when the cathedral started to take form. It took a year to complete the chapel-mor, sacristia, and consistory. It took even more years to finish the body and façade of this remarkable church. It was to be in the year 1759 when the church finally took form after which, the two towers were constructed. Joao of Sepulveda God painted the ceiling in 1764. In 1781, the altar of Our Lady of the Soledade was inaugurated. Inacio Melo Albuquerque did the cutting work for the cathedral in 1784. The original designs would later disappear until 1858 when it the move for its restoration took place. It was during these times when the church took a neoclassical design.

The Catedral de Sao Pedro dos Clerigos, as already mentioned, has an admirable frontispiece reflecting the Baroque influence at that time. The choir area has a balusters adorned with religious carvings. Near this area is a frontão with the image of St. Peter. Details such as copulas, pinnacles, railing designs, all make up this part of the church. The balconies are in racoco-style. As part of the colorful colonial buildings in the Patio de Sao Pedro, the building is also resembles the Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome or the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome. Thus, the church comes in a cultural mix of 16th century mannerism, baroque, racoco, and neoclassical art, with its rosewood altars, gold-covered pulpit, and a ceiling carved with images of St. Peter, the twelve apostles, and the four evangelists.

The good news is that the Catedral de Sao Pedro dos Clerigos is not far from the town center. Its accessibility to cafés and restaurants lining St. Peter's Square makes it one of the most visited places in Recife.
