Be one with Mother Nature in Dois Irmaos Park!

Dois Irmaos Park can be found in the mountains of Recife, Pernambuco. It is one of the biggest and the most popular zoo botanical gardens in Pernambuco or even the whole of Brazil.  Recife is the capital of Pernambuco, which is situated in the Northeastern part of the country.  Surrounded by rivers, Recife is said to be the “Venice of Brazil”.   It is also considered to be one of the country’s cultural capitals.

Dois Irmaos Park covers approximately 140,000 square meters of land.   The park is named after the Dois Irmaos Mountains, where it sits, and translates to “Two Brothers”.  It was created on January 14 1939 by the Federal University of Pernambuco as an environmental protection area (commonly known as a reserve)

The park was first called Jardim Zoobotânico de Dois Irmãos or the Zoobotanico Garden of Dois Irmaos and was run by ecologist and University of Pernambuco professor, Joao de Vasconcelos Sobrinho.  By July 7, 1997 it was renamed Dois Irmaos Park.  Today it is also referred to as Dois Irmaos Municipality Park.

Reaching the park used to be quite a challenge.  One had to endure hours of hiking steep dirt trails.  But today, visitors of Dois Irmaos Park have access to land transportation. Renovations have been made so that cars can now, easily and safely, travel to the Park.   Lights have been installed in the pathways and policemen patrol the area to ensure the safety of the visitors traveling by car and the more adventurous visitors who prefer to take up on the hiking challenge after dusk. 

Dois Irmaos is home to almost a thousand animals and plants.  There are about 120 different species of reptiles, mammals, and birds in the park.   Preguicas, quatis, and saguis – I’m sure these are new to your ears.  These are just some of the native species of animals you will see in the park.   As for the flora, you will surely see some of the most exotic plants on earth. 

There is so much more that you can do than just observe the plants and animals in Dois Irmaos because it is more than just a zoo or a botanical garden.    The park allows for a more hands-on experience with the animals. There is something for everyone in Dois Irmaos Park. It also offers a small theatre, a soccer field, a playground and a museum.  Remember to take you cameras with you. Rio Irmaos is known for its spectacular views of the Leblon and Ipanema beaches, and of the entire city.
