Nossa Senhora Da Conceicao Dos Militares and Recife, Brazil
Recife’s Nossa Senhora da Conceicao Dos Militares, as it is aptly called, is one of the most well preserved churches in this part of the Brazil. Built in 1726, it has simple Baroque façade, but as one enters the church, the traveler would be greeted by ornate paintings in the ceiling. The paintings mainly depict the Guararapes Battle against the invading Dutch. The church is also historical because it was where the leaders of the Praieira Revolution and the Paraguay War were buried. The place is, thus, a reminder of how Brazilian people in Recife rose against colonialism and the central role of religion to inspire these uprisings.
Inside the chapel, one will see images of Nossa Senhora da Conceicao Dos Militares in the altar-mor, paintings on the battle of the Guararapes near a portrait of the Virgin Mother, and a central arc of white rococo plated with gold. The church was constructed with a very simple façade by the Brotherhood of the Sergeants and Soldiers of the Garrison of Recife. It is also easy to find, as it is only in the New Street, right at the quarter of San Antonio. The Nossa Senhora da Conceicao Dos Militares was built in response to a request of the Brotherhood to construct such under the Virgin Mary's patronage.
Its pulpit is also a piece of artwork. Designed according to the Baroque-rococo style, the pulpit also has a painting of the Immaculate Concepcion with the serpent under feet and angels all around her. Right above the Virgin is a painting of God the Father. The Nossa Senhora da Conceicao Dos Militares has also space for its choir. Separated by railings in a golden cut, the choir area is has panels painted with the image of the Our Lady of Conceicao with its sides tipped by angels holding doves, a symbol of the Holy Spirit. Another panel also has a picture of the Blessed Virgin pregnant with the boy Jesus. Each panel in this part of the church depicts a certain aspect of Catholic belief as it pertains to the Virgin Mary.
Perhaps, a place the traveler would not want to miss is the Museo de Arte Sacra Padre Roberto Barbalho or the Father Roberto Barbalho Museum of Sacred Art. It boasts of an extensive collection of artifacts from Recife's religio-cultural history marked by successive colonizations and wars. A visit to the museum is sure to make your visit to Recife more meaningful. After your visit, there are cafés nearby where you can rest while you absorb the history and beauty of the visual cultures in this part of Brazil.
