Oficina de Ceramica Francisco Brennand is Recife’s Artist’s Heaven on Earth

The Oficina de Ceramica Francisco Brennand is touted to be one of Recife’s jewels of a cultural stone.  This houses the studio, workshop, and museum of Francisco Brennand, Brazil’s foremost artist.  The ceramic artist transformed his majestic ceramics factory into a studio situated amidst thick, unspoiled forest is just a few kilometers outside the city.  In Recife, the Oficina de Ceramica Francisco Brennand is an attraction tourists must not pass up.

Once inside the premises of the Oficina de Ceramica Francisco Brennand, you will be met by a big fountain with a rebellious maiden soaring above, welcoming visitors to enter the premises.  Within are put on view roughly over two thousand artistically placed pieces.  Creatures of different make, odd, grotesque gargoyles, lizards exploding from walls, geese wearing helmets and other whimsical objets de art.  Theses are the offshoots of decades of ceramic artistry.

Strolling in to the square, splendid structures and some off the wall phalluses and large breasts are downright eye popping.  A beautiful pond with black swans, ceramic snakes mixed with naked bodies are splattered all over.  What makes it more interesting are the individual work of arts found at the end of the courtyard.

The museum is even more impressive than the courtyard.  In it are little rooms with odd lights which are out of sight.  Large walls proudly stand around welcoming visitors.  Ceramics are all over leaving no space unimpressed.  Countless pieces carry on the drift of phalluses, breasts and butts together with out of this world animals and monsters.

The artist, Francisco Brennand, is considered one of Brazil’s consummate ceramic artists.  The Dream Master, as he is called today studied art in Europe.  He traveled all over Italy, France and Switzerland.  When he returned to his country, he started his work of art on his father’s property and eventually began his enormous development of ceramic sculptures.  It took him 25 years of obsessive work that brought forth what exist presently.  At the Oficina de Ceramica Francisco Brennand, you can find a tile factory, an imposing courtyard and a majestic museum.

Visitors traveling down Recife to the famous atelier are experiencing a dreamlike trip into a strange world.  While there the visitors can take note that the studio is divided into two sections, the indoor and the outdoor.  The courtyard is where you walk through a footpath enclosed by a Romanesque arcade leading to the outdoor section filled with sculptures.  At the end of this area is the indoor section where a temple like structure can be found.  The structure has a dome ceiling.

Oficina de Ceramica Francisco Brennand is one of its kind.  Aside from the sculptures the walls are embellished with sayings from grandees like Ariano Suassuna and Ludwig Wittgenstein. The museum is remarkable and striking.  The sculptures lined the gallery neatly placed in white pedestals.  The pieces are different from each other.  They possess a unique quality found only in the gallery of the artist.  From heroic figures to phallic symbols and butts and to outlandish animals, the sculptures are fodder for the imagination.
