Pernambuco History
Ever wonder who founded Recife and which explorer travel to Recife? A Portuguese man named Duarte Coelho Perira and his crewmen landed in Brazil in 1534 and claimed the land for the Brazil crown. The royals then divided Brazil into several different states, and Pernambuco was the most economically successful state of Brazil.
The reason why this particular area of Brazil was successful was due to a well-developed sugar cane industry. Pernambuco history states the land has always been rich and fertile; the perfect soil for planting!
However, Recife natives did not operate the machinery that helped produce the sugarcane, so the Portuguese brought slaves over from Africa to work. This blend of African, Portuguese, and Brazilian influences created a unique culture. In 1630, the Dutch invaded parts of Brazil and took control of Recife. During the Dutch rule, Recife quickly flourished into a major cosmopolitan city.

In order to take full advantage of Recife cultural attractions, it is a great idea to plan a trip to one or more of the many museums in Recife.
