The Santissimo Sacramento (Matriz De San Antonio) in Recife, Brazil

Santissimo Sacramento (Matriz de San Antonio) is one of Recife’s impressive architectures. Recife is teeming with diversity---a diversity that includes religious diversity as seen in one of its building such as the Santissimo Sacramento (Matriz de San Antonio). As its history spans centuries of colonization and migration, it has become a place where past and present meet, continents converge, and cultures mix in all their multifarious colors and textures. African influences care noticeable in the dances and culinary arts. Speaking of culinary arts, Recife is a metropolitan area that has a variety of tastes to choose from. Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Indian, African, Japanese, Lebanese influences, to name a few, have framed the taste preferences of the people of Recife.

With a diversity of tastes, sounds, and textures, it is also not surprising that we find Recife, a city with a diverse cultural landscape especially in the architectural scene. Most of Recife's excellent architectures date back to the 18th and 19th centuries---periods of tumult in Brazil's colonial past. One of these architectural heritages is the Santissimo Sacramento (Matriz de San Antonio) or the Holy Sacrament (Saint Anthony Mother Church). The church has a distinct Baroque style in its rendering, as it was built between the years 1753 and 1790. A testimony of Recife's colonial past, the Santissimo Sacramento (Matriz de San Antonio) is also church visited by many tourists every year.

Located at the Praca de Independencia, the Santissimo Sacramento (Matriz de San Antonio) is near places of interest. Serving as the centerpiece of the church is an enormous crystal chandelier. The church also houses images of Saint Anthony and Saint Sebastian. Right at the San Antonio district, after a visit in the church one could just enjoy the cafés and restaurants nearby. The church is open daily from 7 AM to 12 PM and from 2 PM to 6 PM. Many have already become awe-inspired by this 18th century form of architecture. Maybe it's time you had your own experience of the place.

There are many beautiful churches in this area of Recife. The Santissimo is only one of them. Since most of these churches were built on the 18th and 19th century, the influence of Baroque architecture can be discerned among them. What's amazing is that despite the progress that Recife has made through the years, it has maintained its landmarks so that the next generation of Brazilians and travelers can admire the wonders that these churches are. If there one thing taken so seriously in this part of the world, it is tolerance between races, religions, and cultures---some things we badly need in our normal work days.
