Explore Recife’s Sights and Sounds and the state of Pernambuco!

The state of Pernambuco, with Recife as its capital, is a province located at the northeastern region of Brazil. This top tourist destination lies on the coast facing the majestic waters of the Atlantic ocean to the east side. The breathtaking coastal zone, the plateau and the terraces and the slopes are few of the natural details that make Pernambuco the beauty that it is today. It has ancient plateaus that have been carved by the natural erosion of the land surface through time. This resulted to cap layers of natural sandstones called chapadas. More than amazing natural flats of the mountain tops, these so called chapadas serve as the boundary lines of the premier Serras dos Irmaos, Vermelha, Araripe and dos Cariris Velhos. All these “serras” or mountain ranges add to the picturesque package of the state of Pernambuco. Its rich soil has blessed the state of Pernambuco with wide plantations of sugar cane that thrives best because of its share of the hot and humid climate of tropical Brazil.

Tracing back to its historic beginnings, the state of Pernamduco saw the Mascate War brought about by the traveling salesman of Recife opposing the legions of the then rich sugar mill lords. The Pernambucan Revolution of the nineteenth century made history when the locals went uprising against the tyrannical colonial administration. The most significant thing that resulted from that revolt was the creation of the Pernambuco Republic. Many other revolts occurred in the history of the Pernambucan province until the formation of present day Brazil.

The province of Pernambuco has a rich and colorful tapestry of people which is grandly celebrated by the carnival and street festivity of the state of Pernambuco. The annual carnival starts at least four days before the Lent until Ash Wednesday. This is highlighted by loud and fun-filled street partying that is enjoyed by the rich and not so rich Pernambucan alike. The most popular of this celebration is called frevo, a traditional Pernambuco music and a music style called macaratu. The street dancing is a customary tradition among the Pernambuco inhabitants which attracts thousands of tourists year after year. Pernambuco is also home to one of the oldest Jewish communities in the Western hemisphere, boasting one of the first synagogues in the New World.

The tourism and recreation in Pernambuco is an accessible destination through its modern seaport and airport facilities. The Guararapes International Airport serves 1.5 million to 5 million passengers every year. The same high end service is observed at their seaports where safety is regulated because of its laser system of docking that caters international ships.

The area which is now known as Pernambuco was among the first lands to be settled by the Crown of Portugal in the sixteenth century. Later on, the territory was created as the Captaincy of Pernambuco under Dom Duarte Coelho Pereira who founded the city of Olinda, the first capital of the province. In 1630 to 1654, the Dutch invaded the territory of Pernambuco and destroyed the old city of Olinda. To serve as their bastion in the newly acquired territory, they founded the city of Recife to serve as new capital. Since then and until today, Recife became one of the most important cosmopolitan centers in South American.
